Binh, also known as Madam Tai, was one of the last ethnic Chinese to be forced to leave Vietnam after China launched a brief but bloody border war on February 17, 1979, which killed an average of 20,000 Chinese soldiers and 10,000 Vietnamese soldiers. However, Binh and her husband returned to Hanoi after her boat broke down while on the way to China. Thirty-three years after the China-Vietnam border war, she now lives in a 9 sq m (97 sq ft) room, one of two remaining ethnic Chinese still living on Hang Buom street, the heart of what was once Hanoi's Chinatown.
